Ex-zones (definition)
Explosive gas atmospheres:
Zone 0: An area in which an explosive atmosphere made up of a mixture of air and flammable gases or vapours is permanent or present for most of the time.
Zone 1: An area in which it is possible or very probable that there is an explosive atmosphere made up of a mixture of air and flammable gases or vapours.
Zone 2: An area in which an explosive atmosphere made up of a mixture of air and flammable gases or vapours is unlikely to occur, and if it does, then only rarely and for a short period of time.
Areas with flammable dust:
Zone 20: An area in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air is permanent or present for most of the time.
Zone 21: An area in which it is possible or very probable that there is an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air.
Zone 22: An area in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air is unlikely to occur, and if it does, then only rarely and for a short period of time.
ATEX product series
Product series R0/T0 (Ex i)
Technical specification:
The intrinsically safe measuring inserts with diameters of 3 mm, 4.5 mm, and 6 mm are designed with a terminal block or flying leads for the R1/T1 to R5/T5 series.
Operating conditions:
Use in hazardous (Ex) areas is strictly limited to installation with a suitable protective thermowell or a connection housing with a minimum protection rating of IP54.
Product series R1/T1 to R3/T3 (Ex i)
Technical specification:
The protection tubes of the R1–R3 and T1–T3 series ensure reliable zone separation (Zone 0/20) through wall thicknesses of ≥ 1 mm and protect the mineral-insulated measuring inserts from chemical, physical, and mechanical influences.
Tapered tips can be used to optimize the thermal response time.
Installation is carried out via:
- Standardized process connections:
Threaded fittings with various thread types or blind flanges (in accordance with national/international standards). - Weld-in sockets:
In this case, proper implementation of the zone separation during the welding process is the responsibility of the user.
Product series R4/T4 (Ex i) and RE4/TE4 (Ex e)
Technical specification:
These sensors are designed for use in Zone 1 (gas hazardous areas) and Zone 21 (dust hazardous areas). Short response times are achieved through closed protection tubes with wall thicknesses individually matched to the measuring insert.
The configuration of the process connections includes:
- Variants:
Without connection, with adjustable connections, or with permanently welded connections. - Note:
The process connections of these series do not serve as zone separation.
Product series R5/T5 (Ex i) and RE5/TE5 (Ex e)
Technical specification:
These sensor series consist of a measuring insert without an additional protection tube. The process connections do not serve as zone separation.
Dimensions:
ø 3 mm, 4.5 mm, and 6 mm.
Process connections:
Fixed threaded fittings (with/without neck tube) as well as adjustable compression fittings or wedge-ring compression fittings.
Ex approvals:
Ex i: Zone 1 (gas)
Ex e: Zone 1 (gas) and Zone 21 (dust)
Product series R6/T6 (Ex i) and RE6 (Ex e)
Technical specification:
These compact cable sensors are available as a tubular design or in a mineral-insulated version. Their high flexibility and variable process connections enable measurements at hard-to-access locations.
Ex approvals:
Ex i: Zone 1 (gas)
Ex e: Zone 1 (gas) and Zone 21 (dust)
Properties:
Small dimensions, various diameters, high adaptability
Product series R7/T7 (Ex i) and R8/T8 (Ex e)
Technical specification:
Cable sensors (extended Ex approval)
These sensors are similar in design to the R6/T6 series but feature extended approvals for Zone 0, 0/1 (gas hazardous areas) and Zone 20, 20/21 (dust hazardous areas).
Designs:
Straight, angled, or mineral-insulated versions with continuous or stepped protection tube and permanently attached cable.
Zone separation:
Achieved via approved IP67 compression fittings (metric or imperial threads).
Product series RE7 and RE8/T8 (Ex e)
Technical specification:
These series are approved for use in Zone 1 (gas hazardous areas) and Zone 21 (dust hazardous areas). The design features a permanently attached cable in the form of:
- Protection tube variants: Continuous or stepped, as well as straight or angled designs.
- Material: Also available in a mineral-insulated version.
Product series R9/T9 (Ex d)
Technical specification:
These high-temperature sensors feature a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) and are approved for measurements up to 1800 °C in Zones 1 (gas hazardous areas) and 21 (dust hazardous areas).
Construction:
A measuring insert with a protective assembly extends from the flameproof terminal head.
Protective assembly
Available in ceramic or metal design. As the protective assembly is not part of the type examination certificate, it may also be provided by the customer.
Product series RN/TN (Ex ec), RT/TT (Ex tc) and RX/TX (Ex i)
Technical specification:
These series cover specific types of protection and special designs:
Serie RN/TN:
Type of protection “ec” (DIN EN 60079-7) for Zone 2 (gas hazardous areas); non-sparking operation without hot surfaces.
Series RT/TT:
Type of protection “tc” (DIN EN 60079-31) for Zone 22 (dust hazardous areas).
Series RX/TX (customized):
Design as a “simple, passive electrical apparatus” (type of protection “i”, DIN EN 60079-11) for Zone 1 (gas hazardous areas).
Delivery is provided without a type examination certificate, but with a manufacturer’s declaration (including characteristic values).
Designs:
Tube-Skin sensors (with expansion loop) or multipoint thermocouples, optionally with protection tube.
